SCULPTURE: Hakaniemi Bridge / Hakaniemen silta, Hakaniemenranta
The Hakaniemi bridge was inaugurated in 1962. It will be demolished in 2022. After the demolition, a single pillar of the old bridge will be erected in front of the Kulttuurisauna as a historical fragment, a monument.
In August 2018, we gathered to hold a casual ceremony to select and inaugurate a column of the Hakaniemi bridge to be preserved for posterity. The ceremony included a sound performance of wind instruments and outboard motor whilst measuring and drawing the selected column. This was followed by a speech and food. The selected column is now planned to be kept as a public sculpture after the bridge is demolished.

The Hakaniemi Bridge is a piece of traffic infrastructure with a surface area of 8100 m2, built in reinforced concrete. It was inaugurated in 1961 to connect Pohjoisranta and Hakaniemi. Upon completion, its aesthetics and the shape of its unusual pillars were critisized. In the 1970’s, the visual context of the concrete bridge changed as the adjacent district of Merihaka was built of similar bare-faced concrete and unadorned pragmatism, retroactively blending the bridge to its new surroundings.
Merihaan pragmaattisuus sulautti vanhan sillan uuteen ympäristöönsä.
