We are welcomed into the world by midwives. Through guidance, knowledge, generosity, procedures and encouragement most of us are born through, or into the hands of a midwife. They are present during some of the most intimate and vulnerable moments of our lives and then, sometime after the birth we return to our everyday and these moments and people become but a memory.
This party was for midwives, for those who welcome us and work hard for our safe arrival. The party was born from an appreciation as well as a fascination with the role of the midwife, being there, present and absent, distant and close, an intimate stranger. What is that role of and who is the person to witness and assist the crazy, messy wonder of a new life?
A Party for Those Who Welcome Us was an event where Nastja attempted to make the wishes of midwives come true. Whether a message, a massage or something entirely different, Nastja did her best to make those wishes into reality: to give something back, to listen, or to make a small dream come true.
Wishes were collected from midwives prior to the party. The party consisted of performative fulfillment of these wishes as well as spontaneous wishes made (by attending midwives) in situ.

Kätilöt toivottavat meidät tervetulleeksi maailmaan. Neuvojen, kokemuksen, lempeyden, toimenpiteiden ja rohkaisun myötä useimmat meistä syntyvät kätilöiden käsiin.
He ovat läsnä yhtenä elämämme intiimeimmistä ja haavoittuvimmista hetkistä.
Syntymän jälkeen palaamme pikkuhiljaa arkeen, ja nämä hetket ja ihmiset
haalistuvat muistoiksi.
Tämä juhla on omistettu kätilöille: heille, jotka toivottavat meidät tervetulleeksi ja työskentelevät ahkerasti, jotta saavumme maailmaan turvallisesti. Vaikka he ovat siinä vierellämme, ovat he samanaikaisesti läheisiä, mutta meille vieraita ihmisiä. Mikä on heidän roolinsa, ja keitä he ovat? Kuka todistaa ja avustaa tätä sekavaa uuden elämän ihmettä?
A Party for Those Who Welcome Us on juhla, jossa toteutetaan kätilöiden toiveet ja pyynnöt performanssin keinoin. Juhla muodostuu
kätilöiden kertomista toiveista tai haaveista, jotka on pyydetty heiltä ennen tapahtumaa.
Kuka tahansa kätilö voi myös esittää toiveen tai pyynnön juhlien aikana. Juhlan tarkoitus on antaa jotakin takaisin, kuunnella tai toteuttaa pieni unelma. Kaikki ovat tervetulleita!
Nastja Säde Rönkkö (b.1985) is an artist working internationally.
She creates projects that explore presence, intimacy, love and community across human interactions and social rituals, from the everyday to the profound. Performance, text, video, technology, the Internet and various social interventions are used as an extension or outcome of the projects.
Her works has been exhibited in numerous festivals and exhibitions internationally, recently at Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki, Finland, Museum of Moving Image, New York, Sydney Opera House, Sydney, FACT, Foundation for Art and Technology, Liverpool, UK and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands. Recent lectures/teaching include institutions such as California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles, USA, Royal College of Arts, London, UK and Oxford Union, Oxford University, UK. She has been artist in residence at Nida Art Colony, Lithuania and Wysing Arts Centre, UK.

ihmisten välisessä vuorovaikutuksessa sekä yhteiskunnan eri rakenteissa ja järjestelmissä. Rönkön teosten lopullinen muoto on usein sosiaalinen interventio. Hän työskentelee etenkin performanssin, internetin, videon, tekstin ja installaation parissa.
Hänen töitään on ollut kansainvälisesti esillä useissa näyttelyissä ja useilla festivaaleilla, viimeisimpinä Nykytaiteen museo Kiasma, Helsinki, Suomi; Museum of Moving Image, New York, USA; Sydneyn oopperatalo, Sydney, Australia; FACT, Foundation for Art and Technology, Liverpool, Iso-Britannia sekä Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Alankomaat. Hän on luennoinut mm. seuraavissa instituutioissa: California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles, USA; Royal College of Arts, Lontoo, Iso-Britannia ja Oxford Union, Oxford University, Iso-Britannia sekä vieraillut residensseissä Liettuassa (Nida Art Colony) ja Iso-Britanniassa (Wysing Arts Centre).
